About
Buttercup Farm, located in Upper Mt. Bethel Township in the Poconos of Northeast Pennsylvania, has served as a working farm and regional landmark for more than 150 years.
Variously known over the many years as Laurel Hill Farm, Old Laurel Farm and now Buttercup Farm, current owners Charles and Ivana Baltic are striving to maintain the history and authenticity of Buttercup Farm as a working cattle farm.
As recently as the 1960s, Buttercup Farm covered more than 350 acres. Having been reduced to 35 acres at the low point, thanks to the Baltics, it has been expanded now to over 60 acres. Contiguous to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area and watershed, it is at the southern tip of an expanse of over 70,000 acres of hardwood forest, mountain ridge, meadow, pasture and floodplain, largely unspoiled and breathtaking scenery along the Delaware River. The farm currently has a herd of over a dozen cattle, consisting of beef cattle breeds including certified Texas Longhorn, Hereford, Limousin and Red Devon. You can view the herd - including Longhorn bull Horn, Hereford steer Bandit, Hereford cow Houdini and her calf Harry, Red Devon cow Cocoa and her calf Buttercup, Limousin cow Muppet and her calf Elmo, and Texas Longhorn heifer Valentine - - in the Gallery section. The farm also has chickens, ducks, and a well-trained (sometimes) herding Sheepadoodle named Bowie!
NEWSFLASH: 2024 — Buttercup Farm has had four new calves born since December! Whisky, bull calf born to Muppet (1/16), Rye, heifer born to Cocoa (1/23), Bigfoot, bull calf born to Houdini (12/12), and Romeo (5/25) Longhorn bull calf born to first time mom Valentine. Buttercup Farm includes an over four acre lake and sits in the shadow of the picturesque and renowned Delaware Water Gap natural landmark and adjacent to the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area.
Situated within the most densely populated region of the United States, Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area provides a unique opportunity to experience tranquil landscapes, rich human history, and striking scenery along 40 miles of the longest free-flowing river east of the Mississippi. The park offers year-round recreation including hiking, paddling, fishing, and hunting.
Additionally, the famed and historic Appalachian Trail runs through the Pocono Mountain ridge less than two miles from Buttercup Farm.
The subject of books, movies, and historic adventures, the Appalachian National Scenic Trail extends along the spine of the Appalachian Mountains from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mt. Katahdin in Baxter State Park, Maine. Of the 2,174 miles of trail, 28 miles are within the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. The Appalachian Trail provides opportunities for majestic views, wildlife sightings, and hiking challenges.
Finally, Buttercup Farm is a legend in local lore, from the mysteriously re-appearing Indian twins, to the hippie commune days to other colorful legends, folklore and stories. The partial setting of the 2011 mystery drama movie “Good Day For It”, Buttercup Farm continues well into its second century as a historic regional working farm in the shadow of the majestic Pocono Mountains.
